"Night" by: Elie Wiesel RJ#12

11/16/11
Dear Mrs.Zrihen,

The book that I am reading is called "Night," by: Elie Wiesel.  The quote that touched me the most was, "I will get out of this mess with peace, and have a normal life," on page 68, because it shows how much Elie has been through and that all he wants is to be free.  By that, I mean that you can tell what kind of person Elie wants to be and how he deserves to get his wish.  Before reading a book, I look at the genre, and then I look at the synopsis to get a sneak preview so I can tell if I would like it or not.  While reading a book, write words that I don't understand in the book, and I put sticky noes in the main places of the book so that I can use them later.  Last but not least, After reading a book, I look up all the words that I didn't understand, and then I do my reader's journal for Mrs.Zrihen.  The genre of this book is Memoir, because Elie is the character in the book and he is also the one who wrote the book.  The main characters in the book are Elie Wiesel, his family, and the nazi soldiers.  The protagonists are Elie and his family.  The antagonists are the nazi soldiers, that are working for Hitler.  The foil is the other jewish people that have to go to these horrific concentration camps.  The setting of this book takes place in Poland where Elie and his family lived.  It was dark, and rainy.  The exposition of this book is that Elie has to go suffer in a concentration camp just because he is jewish.  At first Elie didn't think this mess would go for too long, but he was wrong.  The climax of this book is that Elie and the rest of the jews shouldn't be bought in death camps, just because they are jewish and Hitler doesn't like jewish people.  The falling action, is when Elie an his friend from camp tried to escape.  The resolution of this book, is that all the jews teamed up to run away from the camp together so they can have a big army force and be free for once in their lives.  The main problem was that they all should have talked it through and make some exceptions.  The author's tone in this book is hard but soft at the same time, its like he couldn't really make up his mind.  The mood he was in was depressing and happy.  The theme of this book was to teach people to always remember what the holocaust was or it will happen again some day.  The author's point of view is that he wanted to give people a learning experience and instead of putting all negativity, just put positive things in your mind.  The pattern of organization is compare and contrast, because they are comparing the jews , to bad people, when they are just trying to live a normal life with peace, and no hate in the world.  The author's purpose for writing this book was to inform people to try new things instead of sticking with the old ones all the time.  Three response starters are, I like the way the author wrote and explained herself in this book.  I noticed how the author really put focus into thinking of how to write it.  I wish that their was a little less violence with how the author wrote this book and put exact details.  I rate this book a 10 out of 10 because I liked how the author was detailed about everything and thought everything out before writing it.  That is what I think of this book.

Sincerely,
Danielle Ben-David

  2. Dear Danielle,
I really liked your Journal ! My favorite part is when you explained the wonderful quote that you picked and I have some questions to ask you about it:
Did someone recommend this to you ?
who would you recommend this book to ?
Does this story change you as a person ?

Overall, I thought your journal was great, except that you put the theme as the author's purpose. A theme is the moral of the story. Don't forget that one mistake ! Your journal also has to be a little longer and more description. Besides that, your journal is very well written. Keep up the good work !

    Sincerely,
    Jessica Bendayan
