"In a Heartbeat" by:Loretta Ellsworth RJ#13

11/23/11
Dear Mrs.Zrihen,

The book that I am reading is called "In a Heartbeat," by: Loretta Ellsworth .  The quote that touched me the most was, "I might die, which means losing a life, but at least I have a heart to give to someone who needs it," on page 7, because it shows how much Eagan has been through and that all she wants is to help someone, by saving there lives with her heart.  Before reading a book, I look at the genre, and then I look at the synopsis to get a sneak preview so I can tell if I would like it or not.  While reading a book, write words that I don't understand in the book, and I put sticky noes in the main places of the book so that I can use them later.  Last but not least, After reading a book, I look up all the words that I didn't understand, and then I do my reader's journal for Mrs.Zrihen.  The genre of this book is Fiction, because Eagan is the character in the book, but she didn't write it herself or tell the story herself.  The main characters in the book are Eagan, Eagan's parents, and Amelia.  The protagonists are all the characters.  There really aren't any antagonists that I can name.  The foil is the doctors and nurses that help Eagan try to live, and the doctor and nurses that insert Eagan's heart into Amelia.  The setting of this book takes place in a hospital, the day Eagan was born.  It was dark, and rainy.  The exposition of this book is thatEagan has a sickness and tries to fight with it, so she can become better and healthier.  At first Eagan thought she could actually get better, but at the end she notices that this is a serious sickness and there is no cure for it.  The climax of this book is that Eagan is a loving little girl that has something that can never be fixed.  The falling action, is when Eagan dies and has to give her heart to some other girl named Amelia, who really needs it.  The resolution of this book, is that Amelia now has a heart from Eagan, which means that its two people with one heart.  The main problem was that Eagan had to lose her life because of a terrible sickness.  The author's tone in this book is hard but soft at the same time, its like she couldn't really make up her mind.  The mood she was in was depressing and happy.  The theme of this book was to teach people to always remember how life is so precious and it means a lot to people when someone loses a life.  The author's point of view is that she wanted to give people a learning experience and instead of putting all negativity, just put positive things in your mind.  The pattern of organization is strong and weak argument, because Eagan has to die, but Amelia gets her life saved, because of Eagan's death.  The author's purpose for writing this book was to inform people that people can be born without a heart, and the only way to save them is by someone else donating their hearts to them .  Three response starters are, I like the way the author wrote and explained herself in this book.  I noticed how the author really put focus into thinking of how to write it.  I wish that their was a little less pain with how the author wrote this book and put exact details.  I rate this book a 10 out of 10 because I liked how the author was detailed about everything and thought everything out before writing it.  That is what I think of this book.

Sincerely,
Danielle Ben-David

"Night" by: Elie Wiesel RJ#12

11/16/11
Dear Mrs.Zrihen,

The book that I am reading is called "Night," by: Elie Wiesel.  The quote that touched me the most was, "I will get out of this mess with peace, and have a normal life," on page 68, because it shows how much Elie has been through and that all he wants is to be free.  By that, I mean that you can tell what kind of person Elie wants to be and how he deserves to get his wish. The genre of this book is Memoir, because Elie is the character in the book and he is also the one who wrote the book.  The main characters in the book are Elie Wiesel, his family, and the nazi soldiers.  The protagonists are Elie and his family.  The antagonists are the nazi soldiers, that are working for Hitler.  The foil is the other jewish people that have to go to these horrific concentration camps.  The setting of this book takes place in Poland where Elie and his family lived.  It was dark, and rainy.  The exposition of this book is that Elie has to go suffer in a concentration camp just because he is jewish.  At first Elie didn't think this mess would go for too long, but he was wrong.  The climax of this book is that Elie and the rest of the jews shouldn't be bought in death camps, just because they are jewish and Hitler doesn't like jewish people.  The falling action, is when Elie an his friend from camp tried to escape.  The resolution of this book, is that all the jews teamed up to run away from the camp together so they can have a big army force and be free for once in their lives.  The main problem was that they all should have talked it through and make some exceptions.  The author's tone in this book is hard but soft at the same time, its like he couldn't really make up his mind.  The mood he was in was depressing and happy.  The theme of this book was to teach people to always remember what the holocaust was or it will happen again some day.  The author's point of view is that he wanted to give people a learning experience and instead of putting all negativity, just put positive things in your mind.  The pattern of organization is compare and contrast, because they are comparing the jews , to bad people, when they are just trying to live a normal life with peace, and no hate in the world.  The author's purpose for writing this book was to inform people to try new things instead of sticking with the old ones all the time.  Three response starters are, I like the way the author wrote and explained herself in this book.  I noticed how the author really put focus into thinking of how to write it.  I wish that their was a little less violence with how the author wrote this book and put exact details.  I rate this book a 10 out of 10 because I liked how the author was detailed about everything and thought everything out before writing it.  That is what I think of this book.

SOURCE: THE MIAMI HERALD NEWSPAPER.

The topic of the article is that a man named Bolivar Perez-Rios served in the military force and when he was trying to save peoples lives by disarming alarms in mines, his sand burned off.
The main idea of the article is (implied/stated): The main idea of this article is that Bolivar is a very important person and will always be remembered for what he did.  This article is stated.
The author’s purpose for writing this article is to show reader’s how one person can make a difference and be known for something good in this world.
The author’s perspective in this article is objective/subjective (biased) because it is saying the truth and not adding or taking anything away from the article. This article is subjective.
The pattern of organization of the article is strong and weak argument because he helped a lot of people and his whole family followed his foot steps.
The reason the author chose this pattern for the article is because it knows what is right and what is wrong.

The picture of Bolivar Perez-Rios.  The picture helps by showing reader’s who Bolivar was.
The caption under the picture.  The caption helps by stating information from the picture.

This article is about (a summary in your own words): how Bolivar Perez Rios, the world war II survivor, helped people by disarming all those bombs in one shot, even though he missed one.
The significance (importance) of this article is: that people should thank this man for what he's done for our country and hope he stays healthy for the rest of his life.
What I learned from this article is: you should always be thankful for what the world does or gives to you because it could've been you who lost someone or something.
What I liked about this article is how detailed the author was, about the issue and how he knew everything about what was going on with Bolivar, google, and his family.
What I did not like about it was that Bolivar had to have a mis-happen and lose his hands.
Who should read this article and why:  I think that people who are interesting in reading about the world and our nation, would be very happy to read this article.
This article reminds me of (text-to-self) because it shows how peoples lives can be taken away in a heart beat.
(text-to-text) : I think this is text-to-text because it tells readers how things/people valuable and mean a lot to others.
(text-to-world): I think this is text-to-world because it is Bolivar and his family members fighting for whats right and helping our nation.

" The Bully" by:Roger Dean Kiser RJ#11

11/9/11
Dear Mrs.Zrihen,

The book that I am reading is called "The Bully," by: Roger Dean Kiser.  There wasn't really a said quote in this short story but if I had to choose a good quote, it would be, " What counts is what is on the inside, and not what is on the outside," because it is liking someone for their looks and not who they really are, which comes from their personalities. The genre of this book is Short Story, because it is short and it is just explaining the main parts of a real book.  The main characters in the story are the Roger, Tony, and Tony's wife.  The protagonists are Roger and tony's wife.  The antagonist is Tony.  There is no foil in this short story that I am reading. The setting of this story takes place in a resteraunt.  The exposition of this book is that Roger had an old bully in 7th grade that he hated, for tormenting him.  The climax of this book is that Roger is finally willing to make friends with his old bully from 7th grade.  The falling action, is that Tony regrets bullying Roger or anyone and he thinks that since his legs are peralized, what goes around comes around.  The resolution of this book, is that Roger forgave Tony and just because tony bullied him, doesn't mean Roger should do the same.  The main problem was that Tony should've never bullied Roger in the first place.  The author's tone in this book is very strong and vivid about how he wanted his characters to sound.  The mood he was in was mad and lonely.  The theme of this book was to entertain reader's on how people shouldn't be bullied.  The author's point of view is that he wanted to show people that bullying is not necessary and if you do it now, you will eventually regret it, when you get older.  The author's purpose for writing this book was to entertain kids and tell them things that will make them really happy but make them realize the difference between good and bad.  Three response starters are, I like the way the author wrote and explained himself in this story.  I noticed how the author really put focus into thinking of how to write it.  I wish that their was a little bit of action in this story.  I rate this story a 10 out of 10 because I liked how the author was detailed about everything and thought everything out before writing it.  That is why I think this story would be really good for teachers and other readers to share with kids, family members, or friends.

"A Ghost Story" by: Mark Twain RJ#10

11/2/11
Dear Mrs.Zrihen,

The book that I am reading is called "A Ghost Story," by: Mark Twain.  There wasn't really a said quote in this short story but if I had to choose a good quote, it would be, " When counts is what is on the inside, and not what is on the outside," because it is liking someone for their looks and not who they really are, which comes from their personalities. The genre of this book is Short Story, because it is short and it is just explaining the main parts of a real book.  The main characters in the story are the big monster, and the girl that helps him.  The protagonists are the girl that helps him, and the big monster.  The antagonist is the big monster.  There is no foil in this short story that I am reading.  The setting of this book takes place in a forest wear this young girl is hiking.  The exposition of this book is that a girl walks around on a hiking trip alone and ends up finding a mysterious cave with a big monster that has lived there for a century.  The climax of this book is that she has found a person she can rely and trust on.  The falling action, is that the big monster is too dangerous for the little girl to be with or take care of.  The resolution of this book, is that if the girl doesn't find a better place for the big monster, he might kill her.  The main problem was that the girl shou;d've never found the cave with the monster in it.  The author's tone in this book is very strong and vivid about how he wanted his characters to sound.  The mood he was in was mad and lonely.  The theme of this book was to entertain reader's on how people and monsters can become friends.  The author's point of view is that he wanted to show people that mysterious ghost stories that scare kids, can also be fun and exciting at times.  The author's purpose for writing this book was to entertain kids and tell them things that will make them really happy but kind of sad most times.

TITLE: WILL STEVE JOBS' FINAL VENDETTA HAUNT GOOGLE?

AUTHOR:  MICHAEL LIEDTKE

SOURCE: THE MIAMI HERALD NEWSPAPER.

The topic of the article is that google stole things from the Iphone to use it for the Android.
The main idea of the article is (implied/stated): The main idea of this article is that Steve Jobs created the Iphone and google stole his features to use it for the Android.  This article is stated.
The author’s purpose for writing this article is to show reader’s how Android is a fake and stole the ideas/ materials from the Iphone.
The author’s perspective in this article is objective/subjective (biased) becauseit is saying the truth and not adding or taking anything away from the article. This article is subjective.
The pattern of organization of the article is compare and contrast because it is comparing the Iphone to the Android, which was really stolen features from the Iphone.
The reason the author chose this pattern for the article is because it knows what is right and what is wrong.
The text features included in the article are:
The picture of Steve Jobs.  The picture helps by showing reader’s who Steve Jobs was.
The caption under the picture.  The caption helps by telling us detailed information about the picture.
All the dates in the article. The dates help by telling reader’s what time period the events took place at.
This article is about (a summary in your own words): how Steve Jobs, the creator of the Iphone, and all apple projects, made the Iphone design from scratch using his knowledge.  Some random person from google decides to steal the features from the Iphone and create a new fake phone called the Android.
The significance (importance) of this article is: that people should think of their own ideas and instead of taking others and making new products, they should atleast ask to borrow some parts of the creation.
What I learned from this article is: Some people make mistakes, but this was no mistake.  This was a theft from the creator of Android, which was participated by google.
What I liked about this article is how detailed the author was, about the issue and how he knew everything about what was going on with Steve Jobs, google, and Android creators.

What I did not like about it was the way Android had to steal Steve Jobs features from the Iphone instead of making their own creations.
Who should read this article and why:  I think that people who are interesting in technology/electronics, would be very fascinated with this article.
This article reminds me of (text-to-self) because it shows how people steal others ideas and use them to make money.
(text-to-text) : I think this is text-to-text because it tells readers how things are made and stolen in one shot.
(text-to-world): I think this is text-to-world because it is Steve Jobs and Android facing the world on which creation is better and more useful.
New vocabulary I learned:
